Mic Test on iPhone

Open this page in Safari, press Start and talk. If the meter moves, your iPhone microphone works. If Safari blocks it, Apple’s settings below fix it.

Press Start, then choose Allow when your browser asks to use the microphone.

Private by design. Audio is processed locally in your browser and never uploaded. There is no server for audio, nothing is recorded unless you press Record, and recordings are never stored: they live in this tab’s memory until you delete them or leave the page. Privacy

Quick answer

Open this page in Safari on your iPhone, press Start mic test and tap Allow. If the meter moves while you talk, the microphone works. If Safari says the microphone is blocked, change the Safari microphone setting below.

1. Allow the microphone in Safari

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Safari, tap Microphone and choose Ask or Allow.
  2. For this site only: open it in Safari, tap the page menu in the address bar, tap Website Settings and change the Microphone setting.
  3. Reload this page and press Start mic test.

2. Check which apps may use the microphone

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Tap Microphone. The list shows the apps that requested access, and you can turn access on or off for each.

Apple also says an orange indicator appears whenever an app uses the microphone without the camera, and Control Center shows a message when an app has recently used it.

3. Quick checks

  • Take the case or your finger off the microphone openings and speak near the iPhone.
  • Close other apps that could be recording, then press Start again.
  • Not working after this? Follow the mic not working guide.

These quick checks are general advice, not steps from Apple.

What we left out

We only include steps we could confirm on the vendor’s own help page. We left these out because we could not confirm them there:

  • iPad: the Apple page we read is the iPhone guide, so we do not give iPad menu paths.
  • Microphone access inside the built-in browsers of other apps: we did not find a statement about this at Apple, so we make no claim. Open the page in Safari.
  • Browsers other than Safari on iPhone.

The level rule behind the verdict (−35 to −8 dBFS is “working”) is our own rule of thumb; see the mic test.
